Storm Season in Arkansas: Is Your Home Ready?

Tips

5 Min Read

Northwest Arkansas averages more than 50 tornado watches per year. Most NWA homeowners aren't as prepared as they think. Here's a practical checklist to assess your home's readiness before storm season hits — and what to do if it isn't ready. Your family's safety depends on it.

Northwest Arkansas sits squarely in a region that meteorologists take seriously every spring and early summer. Tornado watches, severe thunderstorms, large hail, and straight-line winds are a regular part of NWA life — and every year, homes across Fayetteville, Bentonville, Rogers, and Springdale take damage that could have been prevented or survived more safely with better preparation. Here's a practical checklist every NWA homeowner should work through before storm season arrives.

Your Roof

Your roof is your home's first line of defence in any severe weather event. Have it inspected annually — not just after a storm. Look for missing or lifted shingles, deteriorating flashing around chimneys and valleys, and any areas where the deck may have softened from previous water intrusion. A roof that looks fine from the ground can have significant vulnerabilities that only a close inspection reveals. If your roof is more than 15 years old and hasn't been replaced, it's worth a professional assessment before storm season.

Your Windows and Doors

Older windows and exterior doors are common failure points in severe storms. Check that all exterior doors close and latch securely, that door frames are tight and undamaged, and that window seals are intact. Garage doors are particularly vulnerable — a garage door that fails in high winds can cause catastrophic pressure changes inside your home. If your garage door is older than 10-15 years, have it assessed for wind resistance.

Your Trees and Landscaping

Mature trees are beautiful — and potentially dangerous in a severe storm. Walk your property and identify any trees with dead branches, significant lean, or root systems close to your home's foundation. Have a certified arborist assess any tree you're concerned about. The cost of proactive tree maintenance is a fraction of the cost of storm damage repair.

Your Gutters and Drainage

Blocked gutters and poor drainage around your foundation can turn a heavy rainfall into a flooding event. Clean your gutters at least twice a year, check that downspouts are directing water away from your foundation, and assess your yard's drainage patterns after a heavy rain. Low spots that pool water near your home are a problem waiting to happen.Your Safe Room or Storm ShelterThis is the most important item on the list. If your home does not have a FEMA-rated storm shelter or safe room, your family does not have adequate protection in a direct tornado strike. An interior bathroom or closet is not a safe room — it is a last resort. A FEMA P-320 rated shelter, properly installed in your garage or a ground floor room, is the difference between adequate protection and genuine safety. In Northwest Arkansas, where tornado risk is real and response times matter, this is not an optional upgrade.

Your Emergency Plan

Every household in NWA should have a clear, practised emergency plan that every family member knows. Where do you go when the sirens sound? How do you account for everyone? Where is your emergency kit?
These aren't dramatic preparations — they're basic readiness for a region where severe weather is a documented annual reality.
